Rangers, specialised Swordsmen, are a powerful early era melee unit, stronger than the Spearman and Warrior, which can only be "found" in Goody Huts by Warriors or Swordsmen, but don't require a source of Iron to support them.
They combine the exploratory capabilities of Scouts with the attack strength of Swordsmen.
